Owen Flanagan speaks at UBC Mar 29, 2010 as part of of HECC's
Green College Lecture
Series. He gave a public lecture on "The
Really Hard Problem" (how are consciousness and meaning
possible in a purely material world?), and met with groups
of graduate students to discuss how evolutionary cognitive
science can be used to enrich our study of culture, religion,
philosophy, and literature.
Ara Norenzayan
gives a guest lecture on the scientific/evolutionary origins
of religion called "Why We Believe" to second year
students at UBC, Vancouver, March 23, 2010, as part of the
UBC-Ritsumeikan joint
exchange program.
Jen helps out at the Integrating
Science and the Humanities conference at UBC, September
26-29, 2008. This unprecedented conference was hosted by Edward
Slingerland (HECC) and
attracted internationally renown scholars like Stephen Pinker
(shown in black with Jen), who was named one of Time Magazine's
100 most influential people in the world (2004) and one of
Prospect and Foreign Policy's 100 top public intellectuals
(2005), as well as other greats like Shaun Nichols and Stephen
Stich (both shown above at centre), Richard Shweder (shown
in last photo, with Edward Slingerland), David Sloan Wilson,
Harvey Whitehouse, and Dan Sperber.
Masaru Emoto speaks at Unity Church in Vancouver, BC, Aug
16, 2008. The crystal in the centre photo was the result of
exposing water to a customized scent sample called "Reiki
Spirit". At the end of the presentation we did an
experiment together, saying "Thank you" and "We
love you" to Vancouver tap water. Volunteers then did
a "taste test" to determine if the prayed-for water
sample tasted different from the un-prayed-for water sample.
The results will be posted online in about three weeks at
masaru-emoto.net

Lama Centre for Peace and Education lecture series initiative.
Dr. Diegel's talk, "The
Mindful Brain: Shaping Our Neural Circuits to Cultivate Well-Being",
was about the newly discovered overlap in the fields of developmental
psychology, neuro-biology, and mindfulness meditation. [read

Jen with Dr.
David Ng and 2001
Nobel Prize Winner in Physics Dr.
Carl Wieman. Jan 12, 2008. Dr. Ng and Dr. Wieman offered
tips on how to both teach and learn scientific topics more
effectively, in the hope of one day making science understandable,
useful, and interesting to a large fraction of the population.
Mathtieu Richard,
"The World's Happiest Man" and French interpreter
for the Dalai Lama, speaks about Neuroscience and Meditation
at UBC Mar 9 2007. The third photo shows a monk hooked up
to hundreds of brain-wave sensors. [related
